Eugene D RouxSeptember 12, 1930 ~ December 15, 2017 (age 87)
CHICOPEE- Eugene D. “Gene” Roux, 87, formerly of Medford St. in Chicopee passed away peacefully on Friday morning at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Gene was born in Holyoke on September 12, 1930, one of seven sons of the late Wilfred and Louise (Rothovy) Roux. He was raised in Chicopee Falls, attending local schools and graduated from Chicopee High School. Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 serving in Germany. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal for Germany. He proudly served his country until his discharge in 1960. After returning home, Gene joined the Carpenters Union as an apprentice, working on many area projects with Building Contractors until joining Fontaine Brothers. He proudly was employed over 30 years with Fontaine Brothers, a fourth generation family construction company. Gene worked his way through the ranks and retired in 1992 as Construction Superintendent. Never one to sit still, Gene always had a project going at home, whether in the yard or at his grandchildren’s. Gene assisted and taught them on many home projects, passing on his skills and a lifetime of knowledge and wisdom in the construction trades. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in Chicopee and the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus. An avid sports fan, he loved his Red Sox and Patriots. Gene and his loving wife of 62 years, Marguerite Roux, enjoyed travelling together, especially to their timeshare in Florida and to the Cape. Marguerite sadly went to her eternal home on November 26, 2015 to join their loving sons who predeceased them, Eugene D. Roux, Jr. in 1981, and Raymond A. Roux in 2004. Gene leaves his granddaughter, more often referred to as his “daughter”, Collen DeGeorge and her husband Frank of Feeding Hills; her grandson Eugene Roux III and his wife Melissa of Wilbraham; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Marie and Emily Rose DeGeorge, and Grayson Eugene Roux. He leaves his siblings; Francis (who was predeceased by his wife Marilyn), Howard and his wife Lillian, Bob and his wife Pat all of Chicopee, Roger and his wife Agnes of South Hadley and Paul of Cape Cod. He was predeceased by one brother Wilfred. Gene also leaves his dear friends and neighbors, Greg and Debbie St. Onge who were like family to him and were always there for him, great neighbors in the truest sense. He also leaves many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The family would especially like to thank the Staff at the Holyoke Soldiers home for the care, love, dignity and respect they gave Gene in this last year. Calling hours for Gene will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway, Chicopee. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 8:45 am at Tylunas Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Patrick’s Church, 319 Broadway, Chicopee.
