Roy Valdemar Olson

Roy Valdemar Olson, 85, beloved husband, of 62 years, of Bridget (McGrath) Olson, passed away peacefully at Wingate at South Hadley on Saturday, April 15, 2017, with his family at his side. Born on April 25, 1931, in Everett, MA, son of Knut Julios Valdemar and Signey (Johanson) Olson, he was raised and educated in Everett, graduating from Everett High School in 1948. Roy entered the United States Air Force on Oct. 19, 1948 and retired from the Air Force on Nov. 1, 1968 as a Tech Sergeant, E-6. He served his country honorably during the Korean War and served in Vietnam from 1966-1967. He worked at Hamilton Standard for 14 years and later at US Envelope, in Springfield, before retiring in 1975. During his retirement, Roy stayed very active within his community. He belonged to the former Centennial Theatre Group in Chicopee and received his Associates Degree from Holyoke Community College in 1978. Roy was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, in Chicopee, who also loved to sing in the church’s choir. He was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots Fan. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Bridget, of Chicopee, his loving daughters, Patricia A. Zimowski and her husband Stanley, of Chicopee, and Deborah L. Goodhind of Belchertown; six cherished grandchildren, Stanley Zimowski III, Daniel Zimowski, Jeremy Zimowski, Daniel J. Goodhind, Michael Goodhind and Kevin Goodhind; 5 great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Zimowski, Daniel Zimowski Jr, Jeremy Zimowski Jr, Thomas Zimowski and Ian Goodhind; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roy was predeceased by his sister, Sonja Stevens and son in law, Daniel Goodhind. Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, April 21 for a period of visitation for Roy from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee, followed by a service in the funeral home celebrating his life at 9:45 a.m. Committal prayers with full military honors will follow immediately after the service at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy’s name may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104.
