Abel Gomes

Abel Gomes                                       1926-2005 CHICOPEE- Abel Gomes, 78, a 56 year Chicopee resident and formerly of Duke St. Ludlow, entered into eternal rest on Thursday June 9, 2005 at home. Abel was born in Ludlow on August 10, 1926 the son of the late Antonio and Anna (Neves) Gomes. He attended Ludlow schools and graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School. Abel has been a Licensed Master Electrician since 1950, and was appointed in 1960 by Mayor Lysek as the Electrical Inspector- City of Chicopee, and retired on May 30, 1992 after 31 years of service. Prior to becoming the electrical inspector, he had owned and operated Pioneer Valley Electrical Company. He was a member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks # 1849 and the Chicopee Council of Aging. Abel was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and served on their finance and administration Committees. He also served on many local Boards including; Board of Trustees and Corporator and Board of Investment - Chicopee Savings Bank, Board of Trustees- Springfield Technical Community College, Board of Trustees- Ludlow Savings Bank, Board of Trustees- Home Builder Association of Springfield and Board of Trustees- Springfield Apartment Owners Association. Abel is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Virginia (Pereira) Gomes, and was the devoted father to David Gomes, both of Chicopee. Two brothers, Mack Gomes and his wife Helen of Ludlow and Antonio Gomes Jr. and his wife Mildred of South Carolina, three nieces, Debbie, Linda and Cheryl, and a devoted family friend, Manuel Surreira of Ludlow also survive Abel. Funeral services will gather on Monday, June 13th at 10 a.m. from the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 319 Broadway, with Rites of Committal to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fuller Rd. all in Chicopee. Visitation will precede the services on Monday from 9-10 a.m. Flowers may be sent, or for those who wish memorial contributions may be made in Abel's memory to Baystate VNA & Hospice, 50 Maple St. P.O.
