Edward D. Nowak 1915 - 2003 Edward D. Nowak 87, of Chicopee died Friday February 14, in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield. Edward was a 40 year firefighter for the City of Chicopee, retiring in 1980. He started his career with the department as a reserve fireman from November 12, 1943 until August 29, 1945, when the late Mayor Edward O. Bourbeau appointed him as a permanent fireman. In 1972 he received the badge he coveted: his father's old Badge Number One. Born in Chicopee on September 6, 1915 he was the son of the late Edward C. and Stella (Grocki) Nowak. He was a lifelong resident and communicant of St. Patrick's Church, Chicopee. He served his country during World War II with the United States Army, Battery D 537th AA Artillery, in Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and Victory Medal. Edward is survived by his wife of 60 years Phyllis R. (Mandeville) Nowak 2 sons; Edward N. Nowak of Hudson, OH Francis W. Nowak of Bristol, RI 3 daughters; Phyllis Garfield of Easthampton, MA Holly Rutkowski of Chicopee, MA Lori Blatnik of Ballston Lake, NY 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren The funeral will be Wednesday morning 8:45 A.M. at Tylunas Funeral Home 159 Broadway Chicopee followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Patrick's Church. Burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee. Visiting hours are Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 P.M.
