James Joseph Shannahan

Shannahan                                                               1932-2010  SPRINGFIELD- James "Jim" Joseph Shannahan, 77, of Springfield and formerly of Chicopee, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at home with his loving family by his side. James was born in Chicopee on September 18, 1932, a son of the late John T. and Dorothy (Mahon) Shannahan. He graduated in 1952, along with his future wife Lynn Caban, from Chicopee High School. Jim served as class president and Lynn served as secretary. He also attended UMass-Amherst. Jim retired as vice president of Ludlow Saving Bank after 20 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and obtained the rank of private first class. Jim was a communicant of Mary Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 420 in East Springfield. Jim was an avid golfer and member of Southampton Country Club. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Lynn (Caban) Shannahan on September 3, 2007. Jim is survived by his four children, Linda David of Springfield; a son-in-law, Gregory David of Springfield; John Shannahan of Bennington, VT, Mark Shannahan of Springfield, and Karen Braica and her husband Mark of Springfield; six grandchildren, Lauren, Nicole, Eric, Bryan, Kailyn and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Noah; three sisters, Dorothy Clarkin, Joan Otto and her husband Jack, and Mary Shannahan, all of Hyannis, MA; and several nieces and nephews. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 16th at 9:30 a.m. in Mary Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Blvd. Springfield. Rites of Committal with military honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1390 Main St., Agawam. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to Baystate VNA & Hospice, 50 Maple St., P.O. Box 9054, Springfield, MA 01102-9054. The Tylunas Funeral Home of Chicopee is assisting the Shannahan family with funeral arrangements.
