John “Jay” Pendrick, 81, formally of Chicopee, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2023 at the Lower Cape Fear Lifecare Hospice in Wilmington, NC surrounded by his family. Having beaten the odds and defied death many times throughout his life, John entered his eternal sleep by going down for one final, peaceful nap.
John was born August 24, 1942, in Glen Cove, NY, the son of the late James and Blanche (Boduck) Pendrick and moved to Chicopee soon after. He graduated from Chicopee High School in 1960. He married Linda (Maynard) in 1961 and they had over 50 happy years together. Early in his career, he was a skilled butcher for Kennedy’s Market. He went on to be a machinist, employed by the American Bosch, Hamilton Standard and Rock Bestos. After moving to NC in 1998, he worked for the Town of Carolina Beach and later he would return to his first career as a deli worker for Food Lion on “the island.”
Affable and easy going, “Jay”, as he was known to his friends, belonged to many Candlepin bowling leagues throughout his younger days. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and painting. John liked a good “spooky story” and would reread his favorites like “The Stand” or “Salem’s Lot.” Jay often could be heard singing along to classic polkas like “Oj-Donna” or the hits of Little Richard. Many a night would be spent playing card games, like pitch, a tradition he continued with his children and grandchildren, who in turn, taught him how to play “Telestrations” and “Cards Against Humanity”. Later in life, he was a master of TV channel flipping while watching NFL football, quiz shows, “Naked and Afraid” and any history of WWII. John had a great sense of humor and knew how to tell a funny tale. He genuinely liked people and dogs, and would share his life’s motto, “Sit down and relax, you can always do it tomorrow.”
He is predeceased by his son Alan Pendrick (1993), his wife Linda (2012), and his older brother, James Pendrick (2023).
John is survived by his 3 children, Jeffrey Pendrick, of Fort Wayne, IN, Sharon Smith and her husband Robert of Westfield, MA and Gregory Pendrick and his wife Nathalie of Belchertown, MA, as well as 9 grandchildren, Ben, Carolyn and Sara Pendrick, Gwen and Nola Smith, Meghan, Justin and Brian Pendrick, Alex Newton and two great-grandchildren.
“Johnny” also leaves his sister, Barbara Hundley of Carolina Beach, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends and condolences on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 9am to 11am, followed by a Celebration of Life service at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159, Broadway Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. For more details visit
