Joseph Benoit

Joseph G. Benoit 1923-2006 CHICOPEE - Joseph George Gerard Benoit, 83, died at Mercy Medical Center early Tuesday morning, May 9, 2006 after a long illness. He was born in Holyoke on January 4, 1923 a son of the late George and Anna (Vachon) Benoit. He graduated from the former Holy Rosary High School in Holyoke in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army and was a drummer in the 2nd Armored Division Band.  He was employed as a Senior Tool Designer at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft of East Hartford, Connecticut and retired in 1987.  He was a parishioner of St Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. After retirement he became a member of The Springfield Chordsmen.  He also engaged in many of the activities as a member of the Chicopee Senior Center and especially enjoyed his participation in the Young At Heart Chorus of Northampton. As a member of the Young At Heart Chorus he toured many countries in Europe.  He is survived by his wife of 49 years; Claire (Matte) Benoit, his son; Robert Benoit of Hampden, a daughter; Jean Dougherty, and son in law; Martin Dougherty, two Grandsons; Sean and Kevin Dougherty, all of Tolland Connecticut, two brothers; Donald Benoit of Holyoke and Robert Benoit of West Springfield, a sister; Lucille Singleton of Dallas Texas, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will begin on Tuesday morning May 16th at 9:30 a.m. from the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan St., both in Chicopee, with Rites of Committal to follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker St., Springfield. Joe's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday May 15th from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
