Madalyn Friedman

October 10, 1918 — April 30, 2011

HOLYOKE- Madalyn W. Friedman, 92, died at home in Holyoke on April 30, 2011. She was born October 10, 1918, and grew up in Chicopee Falls, the daughter of Harry and Sadie Wolfson.  Maddy graduated from Chicopee High School and Fitchburg State College, and received a masters degree in education from Springfield College.  She worked for over 30 years in the Chicopee school system, teaching every grade from one through seven, and later as a guidance counselor at Chicopee Comp.  In her long, active retirement she travelled extensively and enjoyed many cultural and volunteer activities.  Maddy lived all her life in Western Mass., except for four eventful and very social years in Pompano Beach, FL. She loved her close family, home, antiques, classical concerts, theater, dance and books. Maddy confronted the challenges of life with energy, spirit and great style, always leaving her mark. Maddy was predeceased by her husband Sidney in 2000, and by her three sisters and one brother, Bea, Evelyn, Larry and Thelma.  She is survived by son Howard and daughter-in-law Annette of South Hadley and Miami, FL.  Our thanks and love to Dora Salguero, Maddy's very special companion for the last two years. Funeral arrangements are private. Between 11:00 am and noon on Tuesday, May 3, friends will gather in the Library at Loomis House, 298 Jarvis Ave., Holyoke, MA.  Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
