Mary D. Varelakis 1921 ? 2006 SPRINGFIELD---Mary D. Varelakis, 84, formerly of 224 El Paso St., died Sunday in the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Born in Chicopee, she was the daughter of the late Stavros and Zaharenia (Katsounakis) Varelakis. Mary was a 1939 graduate of Tech High School in Springfield, graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1943, and received her certificate in anesthesiology from St. Vincent's Hospital, Worcester in 1949. Mary was an Air Corps Nurse, serving in France during WWII, and after her discharge, worked as a nurse-anesthesiologist at the Cincinnati Veteran's Hospital for many years, retiring in 1971. After her retirement, Mary moved back home to the Springfield-Chicopee area. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Springfield. Mary is survived by a niece, Despina Costa and her husband David of Agawam, and their children, Anthony & Steven Costa, a nephew Steven Varelakis and his wife Karen of Springfield, and their children Sophia & Steven Varelakis, Jr., and a sister-in-law, Angeliki Varelakis of Agawam. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Varelakis in 1988 and her sister Anna Varelakis in 1990. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 11:00AM in Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay St., Springfield. Visiting hours will be Friday, June 23 from 6-8:00PM at the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway, Chicopee.
