BELCHERTOWN-Mary Ann (Welch) Goonan, 82, passed away at her home in Belchertown peacefully on Monday June 5, 2023. Mary Ann was born in Springfield on July 19, 1940 to Tom and Mary (Horgan) Welch, who both immigrated from Ireland in the 1920’s. Mary Ann attended local schools and graduated from Springfield Technical High school where she was a member of the cheerleading squad. She worked for over 20 years as Unit Secretary in the ER at Wesson Hospital in Springfield where she made many lifelong friends. Mary Ann was so kindhearted and always had kind words for everyone, she was always there to help anyone out in crisis or time of need. She loved to bake Irish bread and Brownies, there was always a full plate at her home if anyone stopped by. She was blessed with a large family and enjoyed every minute of their company. She loved it when all her grandchildren, stepchildren and nieces and nephews visited her in Rhode Island so they could all enjoy Misquamicut Beach which they did for so many years. She was sadly predeceased by her husband John Goonan, with whom she enjoyed many summers with in Westerly, Rhode Island. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Robert McCarthy Sr., who she remained close friends with. She will be missed by her two sons; Robert McCarthy Jr. and his wife Diane of Belchertown and Steven McCarthy and his wife Deborah and her three grandchildren; Patrick, Ryan and Erinna all of Ware. She will be sadly missed by all her Goonan stepchildren, grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her brother Tom Welch of Warren and sister Kathleen Fox of Venice, Florida and she especially enjoyed spending time with her brother Bob Welch who lives close by in Westerly, R.I. Mary Ann was predeceased by her siblings, Doug Welch and Estelle Morin and brother in-law Charles Morin all of Springfield and sister in-law Barbara Welch of Westerly and sister in-law, Andre Welch. FAMILY AND FRIENDS WILL GATHER FOR CALLING HOURS AT TYLUNAS FUNERAL HOME, 159 BROADWAY ST., CHICOPEE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 2023 FROM 9:00 TO 11:00 A.M. WITH A RELIGIOUS SERVICE AT 10:45 A.M. AT THE FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, Northampton St., Holyoke. Donations in Mary Ann’s memory may be made to JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
