Mary H. Zacharkow

CHICOPEE-Mary H. Zacharkow, 80, Chicopee was called safely home on Monday July 16, 2018 at Mercy Medical center in Springfield after a brief illness. Mary was born in Chicopee, a daughter of the late John and Grace (Kelley) Hickey. A lifelong resident of the city, Mary attended local schools, graduating from Chicopee High School in the class of 1955. She married her beloved husband, Richard E, Zacharkow Sr. on May 11, 1957 at the former St. Mary's Church. Most of their married life was spent on Goodhue Avenue in Chicopee. Mary began her working career with American Bosch as a secretary to the Patent Attorneys. She then began a long career with Chicopee Cooperative Bank, working her way up from teller to Branch Manager. After leaving Chicopee Cooperative, she proudly worked as an Aide to Mayor Joseph J. Chessey Jr. for 10 years. She was never one to sit still and always kept busy, whether it was traveling, reading, doing crossword puzzles and especially walking. She was the past treasurer for the Taste of Chicopee for many years and an active member of the Chicopee Senior Center where she was President of the Travel Club. She was a devoted communicant of the Catholic Church and attended Mass at both St. Patrick's Church in Chicopee and St. Anne's Parish in Fairview. Her beloved husband Richard sadly passed away on June 2, 1989. She leaves her devoted children; Sharon Zacharkow, Mary Konopacki and her husband Donald and Richard Zacharkow Jr. and his wife Carmen. She also leaves two grandchildren; Chris and Victoria Konopacki as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her siblings; Grace, Morris, John "Jack", Ellard, James and Donald Hickey. Calling hours for Mary will be Friday afternoon at the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee from 4 to 7 p.m.  Funeral Services will be Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m. from the Tylunas Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 319 Broadway St. and burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fuller Rd., Chicopee. Donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Chicopee Senior Center, 5 W. Main Street, Chicopee, MA 01020
