Raymond H. Dumont

Raymond H. Dumont, 95, passed away November 27, 2013 at the Life Care Center of Wilbraham. Born in Chicopee, on May 4, 1918, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Arbour) Dumont.  Ray was a lifelong resident of Chicopee Falls and attended Chicopee High School. He graduated from the Vaughn Barber School in Boston and then joined his father at Dumont's Barber Shop on Main St in Chicopee where he worked for 23 years. Ray became a widely known and popular barber in downtown Chicopee Falls and went on to own and manage Westover Barber Shop.   Later in his career he worked as a real estate agent for Darcy Real Estate in Chicopee for 5 years and then for MacMillan Real Estate in Springfield for 10 years retiring in 1980. Ray was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Chicopee and past president of the Barber's Union Local 199. He was also an active member of the Chicopee Senior Center, enjoying their exercise program and various field trips over the years. Ray loved golfing and being outdoors. He enjoyed working around his yard and was proud of his garden, especially his tomatoes. He became proficient at his lathe, making many wooden bowls and trinkets for his family and friends. Ray and his loving wife of 72 years Ethel "Sis" (Kindness) moved to The Arbors of Chicopee in July 2011, where she continues to reside. Besides his wife he is survived by his two daughters, Elaine Meara and her husband Billy of Longmeadow and Janet Dumont of Chapel Hill, NC, two grandchildren Scot Meara and his wife Jennifer of East Longmeadow and Tracey Panaia and her husband Bruce of Springfield and two great grandchildren Bryan and Riley Meara. Ray was predeceased by his son Allen in 1985, three brothers Edmond, Arthur and George, and four sisters Antoinette Fauteux, Alma (Kemp) Balthazar, Aurore Moriarty, and Edna Mercier. Funeral services in honor of Ray will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at 2pm at the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St, Chicopee, with visitation following the service until 5pm. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 11am in Fairview Cemetery, Chicopee.
