Richard William Viens

February 25, 1925 — February 3, 2020

CHICOPEE-Richard W. Viens, 94, of Reed street in Chicopee passed away on Monday at Holyoke Medical Center. Richard was born in Chicopee on February 25, 1925, one of eleven children to Euclid and Beatrice (Mongeau) Viens.  He was a lifelong Chicopee resident and attended local schools. Richard enlisted in the US Army, proudly serving with the 5th Infantry regiment of the 71st Division. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned home to start his family. He married Margaret (Tarpinian) and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage until her passing in 2005. He worked for Uniroyal Tire over 30 years until his retirement. Never one to sit still, he volunteered for the Chicopee Senior Center and the Council on Aging, giving his time for many events and functions and also worked for the Transcript Telegram in Holyoke for a number of years. He kept active throughout his life enjoying the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a devoted member of St. Anne's RC Church in Fairview. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret and several siblings; Roger, Ernest, Alfred, Rita, Gloria and Shirley. He leaves his beloved children; Cynthia Yargeau and her husband Brian of Ludlow,  Ronald Viens and Paul Viens and his wife Denise of Chicopee, Gary Viens and his partner Zina of Holyoke, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a great grandchild on the way. He also leaves his dear siblings; Lucille Teague of New London, Ct., Joan Urbanski of Holyoke and Claire Giblo and Connie Frutuoso both of Chicopee as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Richard will be Wednesday morning, Feb. 5, 2020 from TYLUNAS FUNERAL HOME, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee with calling hours from 8:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. followed by a Liturgy of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne's Parish, 30 College St., Fairview. Burial with military honors will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Chicopee.
