Dr. Peter M. Figgie III, 87, passed away peacefully March 19, 2021 at home in the loving care of his family and his wife Sandra. Born in Springfield on June 27, 1933 and raised in Chicopee Falls, Peter was the cherished son of Peter M. and Helen (Ferris) Figgie. Home to Peter in his early years was a close and loving three family home on Victoria Park. Here with his beloved sister Joyce, many cousins, aunts and uncles, lifetime memories were formed.
Peter attended Cathedral High School in Springfield where he excelled academically and enjoyed playing the trumpet in the school band. He received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1954 and then enrolled in Georgetown School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery. After graduation Peter served in the United States Navy. In July of 1957 he married Geneva (Currivan) going on to have six beautiful children together. Peter and his growing family relocated to Western Mass eventually settling in Longmeadow. He established his successful family dental practice in nearby Chicopee. Peter was a dedicated, caring, empathetic dentist for over 40 years who forged strong relationships with all his patients.
Peter was an entrepreneur with interests as varied as education, real estate, and property development. One of his proudest achievements was co-founding Eagle Hill School in 1966 located in Hardwick, Ma. Peter, ever the visionary, recognized the need to help children with learning disabilities. Eagle Hill has since developed into a world renowned educational institution that is still thriving today.
Peter was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Longmeadow Country Club. There were few places Peter was happier than on a golf course. He and Sandy enjoyed playing golf together at their Florida home. Winters he could be found skiing Stratton Mountain with his children and close family friends. Peter loved to travel all over the world and a particularly memorable trip was with his cousins to Ireland to explore their ancestry and create memories.
Peter appreciated all types of music including Frank Sinatra, classical, jazz, and Broadway show tunes. He would often break out his trumpet and entertain his children and grandchildren with an impromptu concert. Peter was extremely proud to become a grandfather. He loved being Papa to his grandchildren and making each feel special and loved.
Known to many in Longmeadow as Doc, Peter loved having a crowd over for a backyard barbeque. Countless fun hours were spent at his home celebrating holidays and birthdays, watching Patriots games or swimming in his pool. Sharing a cigar, some Irish Whiskey and a tall tale, he loved to entertain and his door was open to everyone.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Sandra Figgie; his sister Joyce Malinoski; former wife Geneva Figgie, his devoted children Jennifer Login (John), Gregg Figgie, Peter Figgie (Sarah), Marybeth Figgie, and his two stepsons Scott Shain (Karen), and Kevin Shain (Michelle). He is predeceased by his parents and beloved sons; Jeffrey and David Figgie. Papa will be dearly missed by his adoring grandchildren; Robert, Robbie, Peter, Molly, Katie, Jessica, Peter, Sam, his step grandchildren; Sarah, Maia, Nathaniel and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. On behalf of the Figgie family we would like to extend our love and appreciation to our sweet cousin Ellie who was always there to offer Dad care, love and laughter.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St, Longmeadow, MA 01106. Burial will follow the Mass at Longmeadow Cemetery.
