CHICOPEE-Edna M. O’Connor, 70, of Southwick Street in Chicopee passed away surrounded by the love and care of her devoted family on Thursday March 12, 2020 at Noble Hospital in Westfield. Edna was born in Boston, MA. on September 23, 1949, a daughter of the late John and Esther (Cole) Greene. She was raised and educated in Boston, graduating from Watertown High School. Edna furthered her education, receiving her BA in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She joined the Peace Corps, foregoing her College graduation ceremony, and traveled to Brazil to help the underprivileged there. She then went to Washington, D.C. and received her Montessori Certification in teaching. She settled in the Chicopee area and while working as a waitress at the Valle’s Steak House, met the love of her life, Thomas M. O’Connor who was working as a bartender. The rest is history, they married on August 27, 1976, the bicentennial of the country and have been inseparable since. She worked as a teacher with the Montessori School in Enfield, CT. for 25 years. Even throughout her sickness she continued to work, her love of teaching always drawing her back, right up until her passing. She leaves her beloved husband of 43 years, Thomas M. O’Connor. Her devoted children; Daniel S. O’Connor and his wife Angela and their children; Gabriel, Abigail and Thomas J. O’Connor of Chicopee, Erin M. O’Connor and her daughter Keira of Westfield and Colleen A. O’Connor and her daughter Hannah of Chicopee. Her beloved sister, Nancy Higgins and her partner Bob Lersch of Englewod, FLA. Her sister in law, Rita Greene of Braintree and many nieces and nephews. She was sadly predeceased by her brother, John Greene Jr. Family and friends will gather to remember Edna on Sunday, March 22, 2020 from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee. The Family will celebrate a private Liturgy of Christian burial for Edna on Monday, March 23, 2020 at St. Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan St. Chicopee. A Public Interment of her ashes will be announced at a later date at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery 1390 Main St., Agawam. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
