CHICOPEE-Jeffrey E. McCarthy, 56, of Chicopee passed away unexpectedly on Friday at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. Jeffrey was born on December 28, 1961 in New Haven, Connecticut the son of Bettina (Preston) McCarthy of New Haven, Ct. and the late Eugene McCarthy. Jeffrey was raised in West Haven, Ct. attending local schools and graduated from Notre Dame High School. He also attended the University of Bridgeport in CT. before enlisting in the US Air Force. Jeffrey served active duty from 1984 to 1988 before entering the Air Force Reserves as an Air Reserve Technician in 1988 and served at Westover ARB until his retirement on December 28, 2017 after 33 years of dedicated service to his country at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Jeffrey received numerous citations and decorations during his service including the Air Force Meritorious Service Metal, Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Metal, Air Force Outstanding Unit award, Air Force Longevity Service award, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon. Jeffrey served under the following operations; Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in Europe and the Middle East in support of our country during these operations. Jeffrey was married to Shelli Kotfila and they enjoyed over 20 years of marriage together. He was a devoted soccer dad to his two daughters and also played soccer while stationed in the Netherlands. He loved to Golf and from the time of his youth in Connecticut, was an avid NY Giants fan. He leaves his mother, Bettina McCarthy of New Haven, Ct. His beloved wife of 20 years, Shelli (Kotfila) McCarthy. His two loving daughters; Brittany and Shannon McCarthy of Chicopee. His stepson, Robert J. Anderson and his wife Erin of Enfield, Ct., and his stepdaughter; Courtney Rish and her husband Derek of Virginia. His three beloved grandchildren; Kevin, Joseph and Hailey. Jeffrey also leaves his siblings; Jill Karajanis and her husband John of West, Haven, CT., Kara Casey and her husband Joel of Bangor, ME. and Molly Borst of Farmington, CT. and several nieces , nephews and the extended members of the Kotfila and McCarthy families. Calling hours at the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee will be Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jeffrey’s Interment ceremony with full Military honors directly at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1350 Main St., Agawam on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 10:00 A.M.
