CHICOPEE- Phyllis P. Rzewnicki, 83, of Chicopee passed away peacefully on Tuesday at Heritage Hall Nursing center surrounded by her family. Phyllis or “Phyl” as family and friends knew her as, was born in Chicopee, attended local schools and was a lifelong resident of the city. She was a longtime communicant of the former Holy Name Church in Chicopee. Phyl graduated from the Baystate Medical School of Nursing and later in life furthered her education, receiving her Bachelor’s degree from AIC. She began a long career in Nursing and Health care, as the Supervisor for many years with BSMC at Wesson Women’s Neo Natal Unit and as a Supervisor in several OR’s and later for Springfield VNA before retiring. Growing up with a large family, Phyl was the neighborhood Nurse, always there to patch up her children’s friends and even the occasional neighbor. She was a Den mother with the Boy Scouts and a Girl Scout leader as well. No matter where her children were, she always took time to visit them, near or far. Phyllis was a giver, everything she did was always thoughtfully done for family and friends. Whether visiting patients in the Hospital, Nursing homes, volunteering at a soup kitchen or dropping off food with shut in’s, she enjoyed spending a few moments to brighten someone’s day. Her heart and soul were always in the spirit of helping others. In the 1980’s she even volunteered with the Peace Corps in Santo Domingo. Her parents, Francis and Stasia Bazinet predeceased her. She leaves her dear sister, Frances Jezouit and her husband Peter of Chicopee and a niece and nephew. She leaves her devoted children; Robert Rzewnicki and his wife, Vicki of New Hampshire, Philip Rzewnicki and his wife, Becky of Enfield, CT, Michael Rzewnicki and his wife, Terry of Chicopee, Pamela Metcalf of Chicopee Peter Rzewnicki and his wife, Cheryl of New Jersey; her grandchildren, Heather, Brad, Justine, Jennifer, Megan, Scott and Jeffrey, her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Owen, Colton and Luna.
