WARE- Robert F. “Bob” McCarthy, 84, a loving father and grandfather, who resided at Church Street in Ware passed away peacefully on Saturday evening (July 14, 2018) at Baystate Wing Hospital with his loving sons by his side. Bob was born in Chicopee on December 6, 1933 the son of the late John J. “Jigger” McCarthy & Celia Bak. He was raised and educated in Chicopee, attending local schools and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1951. Bob was an accomplished and gifted student and baseball pitcher. He enlisted in the USMC and served aboard the USS Sea Lion Submarine as a radio Operator where he became a Morse Code expert while attaining the rank of Corporal. After returning home he furthered his education, receiving his B.S.M.E. Degree from Western New England College in 1965, graduating Cum Laude and his Master’s Degree in Education from Westfield State in 1976. He was a member and Alumnae of the Sigma Beta Tau Fraternity. He was hired right out of College from WNEC and went to work at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford as a Test Engineer in the Rotating Structures Department and later transferred to Hamilton Standard as a Test Engineer and worked on several projects including the Life Support Systems on the L.E.M. (Lunar Excursion module) for the Apollo missions. He was laid off in 1969 from Hamilton Standard, thus embarking on a 30+ year career in education as a drafting teacher for the Chicopee Public School System. He taught primarily at Chicopee High School throughout his career and mentored many gifted students, guiding many to careers in Engineering and Drafting. Bob retired from teaching in 2002. Bob enjoyed his retirement, attending his grandchildren’s various sporting events including Soccer, lacrosse, Baseball, Hockey and Bowling. He also worked part time at his son Steve’s, Jane Alden store, in the town of Ware where he made many new friends. Bob was well known as an expert in baseball trivia and enjoyed fielding many tough baseball trivia questions. He especially knew the Red Sox player history and Team Stats like the back of his hand. Bob will be sadly missed by his two devoted sons; Bob McCarthy Jr. and his wife Diane of Belchertown and Steve McCarthy and his wife Deb of Ware. His three cherished grandchildren; Patrick, Ryan and Erinna from Ware. He also leaves his longtime partner of 23 years with whom he lived in Ware, Sandra Slattery. Bob leaves many nieces and nephews and was predeceased by his siblings; Jack and Ed McCarthy of Chicopee. Calling hours at the Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee will be Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. A Funeral Home Service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Tylunas Funeral Home immediately followed by burial with United States Marine Corp honors in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Montgomery St., Chicopee.
