SAN DIEGO, CA. - Samuel R. Roberts, 94, of San Diego passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018 in San Diego CA. Sam was born in Chicopee, Mass to the late Samuel J and Clara C. (Harland) Roberts. He was raised and educated in Chicopee, growing up on Madison Street. He attended local schools and graduated from Chicopee High School, class of 1941.  He enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Parche (SS-384) Submarine as "Fire Control First Class" He received numerous commendations and medals including the Bronze Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Submarine Combat Insignia, Asiatic-Pacific theatre Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was honorably discharged returning home in 1946. After his service he worked for the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company as a Loss Control Specialist both in Massachusetts and  also after moving to Playa Del Ray in California. Sam retired and went on to a second career with Visual Communications Inc. as an Engineer in Playa De Ray and San Diego for another 35 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Encinitas, CA. He was a life member of the Westchester Elks Lodge #2050 as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3774. Sam enjoyed playing golf and flying small planes, from which he used his photographic skills to document his many flights.  Sam leaves a niece; Linda J Pridanonda and her husband Paul of Seal Beach, California and his nephew Robert Kay Jr. of Seattle Washington. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Catholic Rite of Committal with Military Honors directly at St. Patrick's Cemetery ( 160 Fuller Rd., Chicopee) Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 11:00 A.M.  There are no calling hours.
