SPRINGFIELD- On Monday, August 17, exactly two months before her 99th birthday, Susana (Ribeiro) Marino was gently carried to Heaven in the palm of God’s hand. She was born in Chicopee, on October 17, 1921 to Innocencia and Joaquim Ribeiro. The eldest of six children, she was a maternal figure to them at an early age, a role she maintained throughout her life.
When she was nine years old, her parents moved everyone to the family farm in Portugal to escape the hardships of the depression. She spent the rest of her childhood working on the farm until, as a young teenager, her grandmother found her a position as a house maid in Lisbon. There she remained until she, her sister Alice and her brother Frank saved up enough money to return to Chicopee in 1943, a goal that was in their hearts almost from the moment they left the United States.
Susana began working in the factory at the U.S. Rubber Company in Chicopee, which eventually became Uniroyal. She remained there for many years and met her husband, Bill, there. Together, they dabbled in real estate and many other projects.
Affectionately known as Susie to family and friends, her entire life was characterized by hard work and devotion to her family. If her parents, any of her siblings, or nieces and nephews had a problem, she made it her problem as well. She always offered sage advice, was fun and funny, fiercely loyal, quick to forgive, and infinitely generous with her time and treasure. In short, she was a true Christian.
Left behind to cherish her memory and smile at the mention of her name are her two sisters, Penny Julio and Madaline Francisco, and her beloved nieces and nephews and their families. Besides her parents, Susie is pre-deceased by her husband, William Marino who passed away in 2010, her sisters, Alice Ribeiro and Maria Andre, her brother, Frank Ribeiro and her nephew and godchild, Lionel Julio. We are comforted by the fact that she has reunited with these loved ones in heaven.
