Theodore L. ("Ted") Bigda

CHICOPEE- Theodore L. Bigda, 91, of Wildermere St. in Chicopee passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Ted was born in Chicopee, a son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Grzybala) Bigda.  He was a lifelong resident of the city, attending local schools and graduated from Chicopee High/Trade School. Ted served in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 in Korea. He saw action in the Battle of Sherwan Valley and Old Baldy in Korea. Ted received the Korean Service Medal w/ One Bronze star, Combat infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged and returned home in 1952. Ted was employed by the U. S Postal service over 30 years and member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Ted was very active in the community, serving as a youth coach with the Moose as a Soccer and Baseball coach for 12 years. He was a member and volunteer with the National Federation of the Blind Helping Hand over 25 years. Ted was a devoted communicant of the Catholic Diocese of Springfield, a member of the former St. George’s Church in Chicopee where he served as a Eucharistic minister. He was a communicant of Mary Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. He leaves his beloved wife of 59 years, Lillian (Lemelin) Bigda. His devoted children; Dr. Mark Bigda and his wife Jean of Easthampton, Brian Bigda and his wife Cindy of Easthampton, Richard Lemelin and his wife Janet of Westfield and daughter, Joanne Reagan of Springfield. His cherished grandchildren; William, Ian, Kierstyn, Zachary and Taylor and great grandchildren; Elaina-Rose and Brennan. He also leaves several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Jeanne Pasierb and her husband Tom. In addition to his parents, Lawrence and Anna, Ted was predeceased by his brother, Rudolph; brother-in-law, Roland Picher and son-in-law, James Reagan. Calling hours at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway St., Chicopee will be Tuesday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services for Ted will be Wednesday morning at 8:45 a.m. from the Tylunas Funeral Home followed by a Liturgy of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Mary Mother of Hope, 840 Page Blvd., Spfld. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Rose de Lima Cemetery, Olsen St., Aldenville. The family would like to especially thank the staff at Chicopee Gardens for the care, compassion and dignity they showed Ted during his stay and ask that donations be made in his memory to the Chicopee Gardens Resident Activity Fund, 44 New Lombard Rd., Chicopee, Mass. 01020
