Tribute

Walter J. Bennett, 78, of Ellerton Street in Chicopee passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020 at BSMC after a brief battle from complications of lung cancer. Walter was born in Ilion, New York on November 22, 1942, a son of the late Milton C. & Dorothy (Peltier) Bennett. He was raised in Ilion, attending local schools and graduated from Ilion High School. He furthered his education and graduated from the State Univ. of NY, at Delhi, NY. Walter had a variety of careers.   He worked as a locksmith then as an Engineer with the State of Connecticut.  After completing computer courses, he did consulting work and taught programming.  Later he worked as a Systems Engineer for the Hartford Insurance Company for 25 years. Walter married the former Barbara Moriarty and they enjoyed 50 years of happiness, love, family and memories together. Walter and Barbara lived in Glastonbury and Ellington for many years before relocating to Chicopee 20 years ago to be closer to family. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and served as cubmaster of Pack 196 in Ellington from 1983 to 1986. Walter and Barbara enjoyed traveling and taking cruises together. They visited many places in the USA and abroad. Walter would always lend his time to help family and friends and was known as the Fix-it-guy, even on vacation he would pitch in to help fix something if there was  a problem. He leaves his beloved wife; Barbara (Moriarty). His children; Paul M. Bennett and his wife Virginia of Albany, NY and Steven C. Bennett of Chicopee. His sister, Jennifer (Bennett) Haggerty and her husband David of Ilion, NY. His mother in law, Virginia Moriarty,  sister in law Susan (Moriarty) Moritz and brother in law, David Moriarty all of Chicopee. Sister in law, Alice (Moriarty) Ryan and her husband Thomas of Otis, MA. and sister in law June (Moriarty) Matos and her late  husband Edwin of Holyoke and many dear nieces and nephews of the extended Moriarty and Bennett families.

Donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Sister Caritas Cancer Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield, MA 0 1104.
