William E. Gibbs, 93, of Sunrise Lane passed away peacefully at his home on Monday evening surrounded by his loving family. Bill as family and friends knew him as, was born in Chicopee, attended local schools and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1945. Bill furthered his education, receiving his BA in Chemistry from American International College in 1950 and his MBA from Western New England. Bill entered the US Navy in 1953, and was commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He served as the operations Officer of the USS Brough, stationed out of Newport, R.I. He was honorably discharged, returning home in 1955. He married the former Barbara Aspden on August 26, 1949 and they settled in Chicopee to raise their family. He began a long career in Manufacturing with a MBA Degree in Chemistry. Bill was a Professor of Chemistry at STCC for 29 years, retiring in 1999. He also served as the Vice President of Burt Printing Co., the Dept Head of Chemistry at Milton Bradley for five years and as Production manager for Rich Lithographing Co. for ten years. Bill was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts Troop 144 for many years, and served on the board and was a longtime member of the Belcher Lodge of Masons. Bill and Barbara were longtime members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Springfield and volunteered for many fundraisers and events over the years. Bill was predeceased by all his siblings and his daughter, Lynn Martin. He leaves his devoted wife of 72 years, Barbara (Aspden) Gibbs. His loving children; Deborah Gibbs Corcoran and her husband Don Corcoran of Oregon, Douglas W. Gibbs and his wife Catherine (Picard) Gibbs of Westfield, Kimberly J. Laflamme and her husband Arthur N. Laflamme of South Hadley and Duane A. Gibbs and his wife Lauri A. Gibbs of Southwick, and his Son in law, Joe Martin of Westfield. His beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. There are no calling hours. Funeral Services for Bill will be private with interment at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
